The Recession is Bullhonkey Kathys Story - When I Grow Up

The Recession is Bullhonkey Kathys Story - When I Grow Up The Jerk Store card by Signfeld  (the best idea for a company ever) This is part of  The Recession is Bullhonkey series, where I share stories of those who have gotten hired and/or started their own businesses (or sometimes both!) since 2008. This is  Kathy Stowells Story, a former client of mine who learned the hard way how to quiet the naysayers and keep moving forward to being a chicken-raiser, homeschooling Mama and coaching school founder! On our second date my future husband asked me over sushi what my dreams were. I’ve never been  asked that on a date so I got pretty excited. That clued me in he was ‘that into me’ and so far he was  passing try outs for my future husband position with flying colors. We were living in the city at the time and I confessed my ultimate dream was to be out in the country,  raising chickens and other small critters (that was my code for kids but I didn’t want to freak him quite  yet). And once we got married that’s what we set out to do. We found seven acres of raw land eight hours  away from any major centre and began researching strawbale house building, exploring permaculture  and integrating into this eclectic, out of the beaten path, small town. We also began brainstorming on  how we could earn an income from such a remote location. And we were figuring it out. As we shared our plans with friends and family the naysayers started coming out of the woodwork.  They  said if we did move out there we’ll be back in one year’s time. And oh yeah, houses built from straw get  blown away by angry wolves. But we forged ahead anyway and have been blissed out in this general neck of the woods ever since.  Straw house still fully intact. But the naysayers kept popping back into our lives. Especially in moments like when we announce things  like we were planning a homebirth. Or when we gush our baby sleeps through the night (we got ‘just  you wait’ for three years running). And, hoo boy, especially when we informed them we wanted to  homeschool our daughter. My husband and I began sharing this newly invented look to throw at each other when we started  getting these comments. It was even kind of romantic. So it was much to my chagrin that when I announced to my beloved that I decided to start my training to  become a coach to help other moms navigate these choppy naysaying waters I was heartbreakingly met  with a hint of nay to his say. Lucky for us deep down he trusts my judgement, my vision and my natural talents to manifest almost  anything. But since this was at a time shortly after the recession the Universal Scarcity Pscyhe was  rubbing up against him like a fat cat. I helped us move past this challenge by busting out a few naysaying squelching moves that not only put  his mind at ease but also helped prevent me from getting rubbed the wrong way while I was putting my  business best forward. 1) Keep a low tolerance for negativity. Kind of like the birth plan announcement episode. The moment you mention you’re having a homebirth,  brace yourself for an avalanche of horror stories. Homebirth or not, I tell expectant mamas to stop those  tales in their tracks. Instead, surround yourself in positive stories only. Here’s where boundary making is a handy life skill to hone. Practice in front of a mirror a script that  expresses your wishes. It helps if you blame someone else like: “My life coach told me to stay away from  negative stories this week. Can you get back to me later on what happened to your friend who quit her  day job to open up a video/karaoke store?”. When next week comes, surprise! Your life coach told you to stretch out the assignment for one more  week. 2) Keep your foundation solid as a rock. In my coaching training program the whole first module we explore what I call the Four Pillars to Mama  Bliss. Mama’s not useful to anyone if her foundation is wobbly, cracked or flooding from spring run off.  When you’re embarking on a naysaying-rich terrain ensure that you’re paying attention to your base  self-care practices, carving out the space for creative play everyday, reviewing your core values and how  to incorporate them into the steps you take toward your vision and drawing in simplicity by discarding  what doesn’t fit with these values. With these pillars in place, you’ll be speaking from your soul’s truth. And who can say nay to that? 3) Keep a gratitude list. It’s totally normal to let the naysayers get to you once in a while but whatever you do don’t linger in that  negative space for long. A sure fire way to wriggle out of that clasp is to embrace a practice of writing  out a list of things, big and small, you’re thankful for in your life. I found this practice to be helpful on a few levels. Not only does it change the charge within me to a  more positive state (which is naturally delicious) but it offers hints to where your initial vision can be  tweaked and your course subtly corrected to head down on a more lucrative and fulfilling path. And that’s kind of what happened with my own journey. I paid attention to the clients I felt most  excited working with and meditated on how I can best serve them. That’s when I experienced my aha  that I should open up Mama Bliss Coaching School. These mamas were ready to turn their passion of  connecting with other moms into a work from home opportunity. And I say yay to that. And I’ll show you  how. Not only do I support them with all the tools to make that dream a reality sooner than later but also the  techniques to contend with the bull of the bullhonkey of the current Zeitgeist. So if you can’t beat them, tell them to shut up, take a hot bath and make a list of all that is conspiring  with you to make all your dreams come true. Your intuition is on to something regardless of what the  numbers say. Kathy is the founder of Mama Bliss Coaching School  ~ a 12 week coaching training program for  moms.  She’s a full-time work at home mom and certified Simplicity Parenting Coach and  Kaizen-Muse Creativity Coach. To read our full methodology and for a more comprehensive list of document management systems, visit ourbest picks roundup page. Why Dokmee?Dokmee Cloud is a low-cost system from Office Gemini that can be run from any computer or mobile device connected to the internet. The cloud-based system has five pricing plans, including a free one.CostBusinesses on a budget will be fruchtwein attracted to the low cost of Dokmee Cloud. Because there is no software to buy, you pay a monthly fee for the service rather than large upfront costs.Editors bedrngnise Looking for a document management system for your business? Even the free 2GB plan provides just as much functionality as the more expensive options. That isnt the case with most of the other systems we considered. We like that you have several plans to choose from based on how much youre willing to pay. While some of the other providers offer a choice of plans, very few have this w ide of a variety.Easy to UseSmall businesses will be impressed with how easy this system is to use. Because its cloud-based, it can be up and running in just minutes. There is no software to install, maintain or upgrade, which can be valuable for small businesses that dont have IT staffs. To ensure your data is protected in the cloud, Dokmee houses its system in a secure data center with restricted keycard access and video monitoring. Also, to prevent the system from going down, there is a dual-distribution electrical path into the data center, an uninterruptible power supply system with 24 hours of battery power backup, an onsite standby generator with automatic transfer switch, and onsite fuel storage. All these fail-safes can give you a little more confidence that your data will be not only securely stored but also accessible when you need it.The systems interface is especially attractive. The homepage is filled with brightly colored tiles for each section, such as Folders/Files, Search, Scan, Upload Files, Workflow Inbox and Audit Report. This platzdeckchenup is among the easiest to navigate of all the document management systems we analyzed. To store documents, Dokmee Cloud uses a traditional cabinet-and-folder approach. You can create as many cabinets and folders within them as you like. You can store documents by uploading or dragging and dropping files from your computer, and by scanning them directly into the system. To make it a little easier to add files, Dokmee Cloud integrates with Microsoft Office. With this integration, you can save the files youre working on in Word, Excel or Outlook into your cabinets and folders with the click of a button.Searching for files is also simple. In addition to browsing the cabinets and folders to locate documents, you can conduct an advanced search that allows you to find files based on several factors, such as file type, the date it was put into the system and specific keywords within the content.FeaturesEven though this is a low-cost system, it offers many useful features. While the cloud-based solution doesnt have all the tools that Dokmees self-hosted system includes, it does have the most valuable ones. One of the biggest benefits of this system is that, because it is cloud-based, it is accessible from any computer with an internet connection. Regardless of where you are, you will have full access to the system. You can also tap into the system from the Dokmee mobile app, which is available on Android, iOS and Windows devices. It provides access to every file and allows you to add notes to documents, view previous versions and email them. The Dokmee app is among the most impressive we found while researching document management systems. The security restrictions and audit log provide tight controls over who has access to your files. To ensure employees see only the documents they should, you can set restrictions on the cabinets they can access. Additionally, the audit log keeps detailed recor ds of when files are viewed and by whom, as well as what edits they made. You can also edit documents within the system. You can make changes to files, view previous versions, merge files, and cut, copy, and paste files and folders. These tools eliminate the need to open the documents in a separate program when you need to make changes.Other features include the ability to scan documents into the system in PDF, TIFF or JPG formats the option to set up workflows to keep projects and assignments on track and moving forward and the ability to create a favorites folder for the documents you use regularly.Customer ServiceOur experience with Dokmees customer service was positive. For each question, the representative gave detailed answers that left us with a clear understanding of how the system operates. We were pleased with the time the representative took to answer our questions. Unlike some of the other providers that tried to rush us off the phone, it was clear that the Dokmee represe ntative wanted to make sure we understood what the system offers.Dokmee also provides help over live chat, a feature not all its competitors offer. We tested it out by asking several questions at different times during the day, and each time, our questions were answered immediately. In our experience with other providers that offer live chat, our questions sometimes went unanswered, or we were told no one was available and to email our inquiry instead.Customer support is available via phone, email or live chat between 8 a.m. and 11 p.m. CT, Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday. Very few of the providers we looked at offer support that late at night.A thorough user guide is also built into the system. It answers questions on things such as how to log in and create file cabinets, and how to upload files and create workflows.LimitationsThe biggest limitation of Dokmee Cloud is that it doesnt have all the bells and whistles offered not only by its competitors but also by the companys own on-premises system. Some of the features it lacks are the ability to set access restrictions by folder and file and to use an OCR tool. Moreover, it doesnt integrate with programs other than those in Microsoft Office.Another downside is that, depending on the plan you choose, you might not have phone support available. However, the lack of certain features and support is the trade-off for such a low cost. If these extra features are important to you, we encourage you to consider another document management system. However, if you do so, be prepared to spend significantly more for it.Ready to choose a document management system? Identifying the Right Personality Type for Virtual Work - Spark Hire

Identifying the Right Personality Type for Virtual Work - Spark HireIt truly takes a unique type of employee to excel in a virtual work environment. While an individual may thrive in a particular role in an office, the temptation of a television, pets, and household chores can cause them to get off task quickly when they work from home every day. For this reason, a hiring manager needs to be careful when bringing new talent on board to work remotely. In reservierung to land the ideal staffer to take on virtual employment, look for the following personality traitsThe ability to focus without reminders from managementMany employees are great at getting work done when they know that their boss is floating around the office, but in order to excel in a virtual work setting, your team members need to stay focused even when theyre working alone in their homes or apartments. This kind of self-motivation is hard to come by, and its one of the most important traits to look for when youre hirin g someone for a virtual work setup. Youll want to make koranvers that they can get the job done even when they dont have a manager breathing down their neck, or else their productivity levels will be non-existent.The ability to communicate well with a managerIts easy to feel disconnected when youre in one place and your team members are in another. In order to keep your business feeling cohesive, with or without an office, youll want to make sure your employees are good at communicating. When youre all working from home, you lose the casual conversations that happen as you pass by someones desk to go to the bathroom or get a drink. Because of this, youll need to go out of your way to communicate. Whether this means sending an e-mail, getting on the phone for a quick call, or sending a text message, youll need to ensure that your employees are focused on careful communication. In fact, they should almost overcommunicate in order to ensure that everyone is on the same page, even when they arent in the same room every day.A passion for what they doWorking from home can be lonely, and many people find that they miss the sense of camaraderie that is inherently part of a traditional office. In order to overcome the downfalls of a remote work environment, your team members will need a real passion for what they do. When your employees love their work and get a real sense of joy from doing it, they wont miss the perks of a traditional office.Making careful hiring decisions as you staff a virtual office is key to keeping productivity and employee morale levels high, as it takes a very specific personality type to excel in this unusual sort of office setup.Image Bigedhar/Bigstock.com

12 Ways to Get a Promotion Before Soon - The Muse

12 Ways to Get a Promotion Before Soon - The Muse12 Ways to Get a Promotion Before SoonGunning for a promotion, are you? With the year a little more than half over, theres still time to snag one before the end of it. In fact, instead of going about business as usual, waiting for your companys performance reviews to roll around, you can set yourself up well now- today, tomorrow, and the next day- if you really want to get ahead. These 12 career coaches weigh in on this topic. If you follow their sound advice, and take those baby steps today, you may just get a promotion before you reif in the new year.1. Address it Head-onHave a clear timeline in mind. Then demonstrate your achievements to date in your current role, being as specific as possible, and backing it up with data Metrics are everything to a manager evaluating your impact. Go in with status updates on projects youre overseeing, and then ask what itll take to get promoted before the end of the year. Your boss will (hopefully) take this opportunity to consider how to help you advance your career at the company, and the two of you can put a plan in place.Yuri Kruman2. Step Up While Your Boss Is OutThis advice relies on the assumption that your manager takes a vacation at some point, and when he or she does, this is when you take advantage of the absence to take on greater responsibility and gain respect thatll ultimately prove youre ready to handle more on a regular basis. Go beyond whats asked of you while your managers out, and itll quickly be apparent that youre a leader too.Avery Blank3. Up Your Wardrobe GameTheres a reason why you wake up earlier and pay special attention to the intricate details of your attire on the day of an interview. From making sure your clothings wrinkle-free to ensuring that your shoes arent scuffed and your jeans arent ripped, you put your best foot forward in this first impression situation. But its important to also maintain this professional image while youre gainfully em ployed, especially if you want to move up. While focusing on clothes might seem trivial or superficial, style and aesthetics can boost your overall confidence, increase your comfort level, and lend you a positive can-do attitude thats sure to impress those around you. Emily Liou4. Check Your Ego at the DoorHows your mindset, really? The best managers are able to increase their skills and capabilities by seeing difficulty and failure as part of the process. If you can tame your own ego and place your need for constant recognition aside, youll likely find that youre more patient, enabling you to show lower-level team members the ropes. What this does is send a message to the higher-ups that youre a manager-in-self-training- and ready for more supervisory tasks.Andrea Gerson5. Maintain a To-Done ListThe point is to keep track of your accomplishments now, so you can make a strong case later. Instead of a to-do list, you want a to-done list.Every time you finish a meaningful task, add it to a simple, bulleted list. On Fridays, take two minutes to look back and figure out which ones really made a difference in your work and toward the organizations mission. Bold those and add them to a key accomplishments section at the bottom of the list.At the end of each month, youll be able to look back at four weeks of key accomplishments and see what you did to move the needle to help make your case for promotion.Alexandra DickinsonWANT A LITTLE HELP GETTING THAT PROMOTION?Good news We know experts who do just that.Talk to a career coach today 6. Understand the ProcessDetermine if theres an open role for you to be promoted into or if the company would create a new role. If its a new role, figure out what the precedent is. For either scenario, flesh out a detailed job description for your current job and for the punkt you want. Make your intentions known, and ask your manager what skills you need to develop to get to the new place. Remember No one is going to promote you just f or the sake of it. Its in creating more value for that you can demonstrate a winning case. Melody Godfred7. Dont Be ShyIf this is what you want, youre going to have to put it out there and make it clear that youre willing to work for it.Have open conversations with your manager and connect with colleagues at your company who received promotions. Ask them about their paths and how they progressed. Get granular with your manager about the steps youd need to take to get to the next level. Perhaps you could use a job description of that coveted role to help identify gaps between where you are now and where you want to be. Seek out whatever tools are at your disposal, and dont be afraid to ask questions. And of course, once some concrete actions have been identified, sink your teeth in and go for itKelly Poulson8. Increase Your VisibilityCommunicate your successes. Dont assume everyone knows the good work youre doing. Your accomplishments and the perception of them, is often the determin ing factor of getting promoted. Its up to you to toot your own horn and make key people aware. This isnt bragging, its accountability for your job performance. Each time you have a major breakthrough with a key prospect, exceed a clients expectations, or close a deal, send your boss an email with highlights and metrics where appropriate. When you have an ongoing record, itll be easier to make your case. Theresa Merrill9. Make it an Ongoing ConversationIf youre having regular check-in meetings with your boss, make sure youre regularly discussing your career advancement and following through on action steps. If you arent doing that and are simply running through tasks, pain points, and soliciting feedback, you need to rework some of the conversation so theres no doubt as to your desire to progress within the company.Neely Raffellini10. Conduct Your Own Mini 360-Degree AssessmentMake a list of people you trust, including managers, co-workers, direct reports (if applicable), internal and external customers. Explain to them that youre gunning for a promotion, you value their opinion, and youre eager for their feedback.Ask them to tell you three strengths and three areas that you could develop to position you well for your next role. Try to get concrete, specific feedback that you can present to your boss with a note about the areas you intend to work on in the hopes that honing those will lead to your next role.Loren Margolis11. Quantify EverythingOne of the best ways to position yourself for a promotion is to demonstrate your accomplishments and the impact you have at work. In order to do this in a way that can be evaluated for a raise or career advancement, youll need to quantify all of your achievements, large and small. Write down details pertaining to your professional successes and the results of your work. Keep a record of projects completed, including quantifiable details such as how many, how much, and how often and include a go-forward plan for increasing results. Angela Smith12. Increase Your Skill Set- at Work and Outside of itOnce you find out whatll position you best for that promotion, seek out those new skills to add to your tool belt. Perhaps its representing the company on a board of directors. Maybe its a masters degree or certificate. Whatever it is, go for it At the very least, youll have increased your skills for the next job whether its at your company or somewhere else.Annie NoggDid you read all this and think to yourself, Gee, I really dont want to have to ask for a promotion? We have an article for that. We also have an article that outlines a three-step plan you can implement ASAP. Whatever you do, make sure youre making moves thatll push your career ahead.
